It was the main anti-tank weapon of Wehrmacht infantry units until mid-1941.

Design of a horse-drawn, 3.7 cm anti-tank gun (designated 3.7 cm PaK L/45) by Rheinmetall commenced in 1924 and the first guns were issued in 1928. By the early 1930s, it was apparent that horse-drawn artillery was obsolescent, and the gun was modified for motorized transport by substituting magnesium-alloy wheels and pneumatic tyres for the original spoked wooden wheels. Re-designated the 3.7 cm PaK 35/36, it began to replace the 3.7 cm PaK L/45 in 1934 and first appeared in combat in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. It formed the basis for many other nations’ anti-tank guns during the first years of WW2. The KwK 36 L/45 was the same gun, but used as the main armament on several tanks, most notably the early models of the Panzer III. The Soviets used the PaK 36 carriage design for their 45mm M1937 AT gun.

During the May 1940 Western Campaign, the PaK 36, being a relatively small-calibre weapon, was found to be inadequate against heavy Allied tanks. By late 1941, the widespread introduction of the T-34 on the Eastern Front made the PaK 36 obsolete.

The addition of tungsten-core shells (Pzgr 40) slightly improved the armour penetration of the PaK 36, enabling it to finally damage the T-34, but only via a direct shot to the rear or side armour from point-blank range. Despite its continued impotence against the T-34, it remained the standard anti-tank weapon for many units until 1942. The advantages of the PaK 36 were its; relative ease of handling and mobility (it could be brought into action very rapidly by as few as two men since it weighed only 432 kg); good quality optics/aiming devices; ease of concealment due to its small size; and high rate of fire.

The PaK 36 began to be replaced by the new 5cm PaK 38 in mid-1941. The Bofors 40 mm L/60 would however continue to see service long after becoming obsolete as an anti-aircraft weapon due to the massive number of surplus guns from WWII, and a small number of Bofors 40 mm L/60 guns remain in service today. Some weapons saw action as late as the Gulf War and Yugoslav Wars. Over 60,000 units were produced up to the present day.

Product Highlights:

- Options to build as a Mk I or Mk III gun

- Can be assembled in transport or deployed mode

- Gun can elevate up and down

- Gun platform can rotate left and right

- Outrigger can swing open or closed

- Extra ammo and gun barrel included

- 4 British gun crew included

Product Code: 280123

No of Parts: 89 pieces / 2 sprues
The 75mm Field Gun M1897 on M2 Carriage was a field gun and anti-tank gun which was used by the US Army during the interwar period and World War II. It took advantage of new projectiles and developments in high explosives. Existing box trail 75mm gun carriages were given sprung axles, steel wheels, and pneumatic tires to allow them to be towed behind vehicles at higher speeds. On January 18, 1934, the conversion kit for existing guns was standardized, and modernized guns were given the designations “75mm Field Gun M1897A1” through “75mm Field Gun M1897A4”. Modernization of 75mm guns also involved placing M1897 guns on new M2A1 carriages. Production of the M2A2 carriage began in 1936, but the conversion process was slow.

After the defeat of France by Nazi Germany in the spring of 1940, The Army became worried about its lack of modern antitank guns. In July 1940, a simplified and improved carriage with retractable crescent-shaped jacks known as the M2A3 was introduced, and it was decided to mount M1897 guns on both M2A2 and M2A3 carriages and equip them with direct-fire sights so they could be used as anti-tank guns. The towed version and the M3 GMC was used by American Tank Destroyer battalions during operations in the North African and Italian campaigns. M3 GMCs were also used in the Pacific theater during the Philippines campaign and by Marine Regimental Weapons Companies until 1944. Their performance in an anti-tank role was adequate against Japanese and Italian armor but inadequate against late war German armor. M3 GMCs remained in use with the British in Italy and North West Europe in small numbers until the end of the war. Towed guns were also used for training and on March 8, 1945, they were declared obsolete and retired.
